Casino Game History – Poker

Like most of the other favorite casino games, poker has a long and rich history. It’s believed that the modern day versions of poker stem from a game called primero. Primero was a very popular card game from Spain back in the 16th century. The game was played with three cards dealt and bluffing was a crucial part of the gameplay. This is why the game is often referred to as “poker’s mother”, because we all know how important the art of bluffing is to the game.

From this original game developed the German pochen and the French game called poque – both games were popular in the next two hundred years. When the French settled in Canada, they brought poque with them across the Atlantic. Eventually the game spread to Louisiana when New Orleans was settled in the beginning of the 18th century, soon spreading up the Mississippi River to the rest of the new nation of America.

Our modern poker games stem from uniquely American variations that have since caught in through much of the rest of the world. Five card draw developed during the Civil War and became the most popular version until after World War II. Between the two world wars, a variation named seven card stud became the new darling of the gambling world. In the early 70s, we saw Texas Hold’em created and this new version of the game remains the most popular poker variation in the world to this day.
