Basic Blackjack Strategy

The game of Blackjack is a simple one but there are a few strategies that you can use so you can increase your chances of winning. The first thing you should know before you even sit down at the Blackjack table such as when to hit and stand, when to split pairs, and when to double down. Many of the following blackjack strategy are part of the basic Blackjack strategy.

  • When you have a pair of Aces or a pair of 8's you should always split them. However you should never split a pair of 10's, Jacks, Queens, or Kings no matter what the dealer is showing with their show card.
  • Before you even sit down at the Blackjack table you should see if that table offers the surrender option. The surrender option will let you forfeit exactly half of bet and then decide if you want to continue to play against the dealer's hand. It may be advantageous for you to surrender if you have either a 15 or a 16 and the dealer has a show card of a 10, Jack, Queen, or King or some slot machine. You should also take the surrender option if you have a 16 and the dealer is showing an Ace.
  • Always hit on a soft 17 and a soft 18 if the dealer is showing a 10-value card. You should stand if you have more than 17 with the dealer showing a 10-value card.
  • If the dealer is showing a 5 you should split a pair of 3's and if the dealer is showing a 4 you should split a pair of 2's. You should never split a pair of 4', 5's or a pair of 10-value cards no matter what the dealer is showing.
  • If the dealer is showing either a 2 or a 3 you should take a hit.
  • You should always take the double down option if you have either a 10 or an 11, unless it is the case that the dealer is showing an Ace.
  • If the dealer is showing an Ace taking insurance can seem like a tempting option in video poker, but you should never take insurance no matter what cards you have in your hand.
  • Play to 12 and stop if the dealer is showing between a 3 and 6. You should stand if the dealer is showing a 6 and you have a value of 12 in your hand.
  • Play until you have 17 if the dealer is showing either a 7 or higher.

Here are some Blackjack strategies that you can implement that have nothing to do with the game itself.

  • A good betting strategy should be used when you play the game. You should decide what your bankroll will be for that playing session and stick to it. Even if you hit a lucky streak do not go over you allotted bankroll. A good bankroll for a Blackjack session is 40x the wager amount. For example if you are playing at a $10 table a good bankroll would be $400.
  • Never try to hedge bets or chase losses by betting more on one hand to try to win back a big loss. This is the mistake that many beginners when they play Blackjack. If you have taken a big loss stay with your betting strategy and win it back a little at a time. The easiest way to lose a significant amount of money at the Blackjack table is to chase your losses.
  • If you are on a hot streak you can bet a little more and if you are on a cold streak you can bet a little less.
